Interactive Whiteboards

An interactive whiteboard can add excitement and interest to lessons as well as being an excellent teaching aid.

What is an 'interactive whiteboard'?
An interactive whiteboard is essentially a projection screen that you can touch with either your finger or a special pen (depending on the type) which then acts like a mouse click (very much like a laptop mouse pad).

What else do I need?
In order to take advantage of this equipment, you will need to team it up with both a projector and a computer. You may also use it like a conventional projection screen by connecting your projector to a VCR or DVD player.

How does it work?
The projector will project you computer's desktop onto the whiteboard and your interaction with the whiteboard will be translated into mouse clicks and movements and sent back to the laptop.

Do I need any special software?
In a word, no! However, to make the most of this hardware, there are several applications that you may wish to consider. For example, if you are considering replacing a conventional classroom whiteboard with an interactive whiteboard and fixed ceiling-mounted projector, we would recommend software that provides you with the ability to draw freely on the screen. Such software will allow you to draw using any colour and thickness of virtual pen and to store and retrieve your drawings. Additionally, you will be able to draw over the displayed image allowing you to annotate drawings, images & videos - very useful! Nearly all whiteboards come with enough software to get you up and running and making full use of your interactive whiteboard.

Can I still use my dry wipe markers?
On most boards, you will be able to use dry erase markers. Please check the instructions supplied with your whiteboard for manufacturer guidance as misuse will generally invalidate any warranty.

Mini Boards/Pads

An alternative or addition to an interactive whiteboard is one or more min-boards or pads. These behave like mini/portable interactive whiteboards (think of a touch-screen laptop display) and can be passed around the classroom with the image being displayed on the main screen.

Do I need a wireless network to use a Mini Board?
It is possible to use some mini boards in a wired configuration but to use them practically and safely, a wireless network is essential.
